Other Important Information & Events

Innovations in Antarctic Communications Workshop

COMNAP announces it will be holding a workshop on  Tuesday 17 July, 0830-1230 hrs to discuss and review communications to and from Antarctica.   The workshop will be held in the Coos Bay Room of the University Place Hotel and Conference Centre, Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, USA.

Communications with Antarctica are currently expensive and of limited capacity due to the restricted coverage of the area by commercial satellite and communications providers.  Improving the communications would provide opportunities for operators to improve the routine transmission of science and operational data, and potentially reduce the number of personnel travelling to the Antarctic.  This workshop is being convened to consider the current and future communications options available to Antarctic operators and whether improvements can be achieved by working with commercial suppliers.

Draft Agenda

Public Presentation

“Retracing Roald Amundsen - Centenary Expedition the South Pole”
by Dr. Jan-Gunnar Winther, will be held on Wednesday 18 July, 1330-1430 in the Coos Bay Room of the University Place Hotel & Conference Center, Portland State University

In 2011, Norway celebrated two of its great polar heroes with the Nansen-Amundsen Year 2011. An important part of this celebration was informational outreach in the form of a modern-day Antarctic adventure, with special emphasis on polar history and scientific issues - past and present.

The Centenary Expedition to the South Pole retraced Amundsen's route, and reached the southernmost point on Earth on 14 December 2011, arriving 100 years to the day after Amundsen. The Expedition was run by the Norwegian Polar Institute and Director of that Institute, Dr. Jan-Gunnar Winther participated. In this public presentation, Dr. Winther will retell his story from the crossing of Antarctica to the South Pole by the team (Vegard Ulvang, Jan-Gunnar Winther, Stein P. Aasheim and Harald Dag Jølle) that followed in Roald Amundsen's ski tracks to the South Pole.

Portland State University "Sustainability" Campus Tours

In keeping with the theme of the COMNAP Symposium, students from Portland State University are offering COMNAP Symposium and AGM participants a chance to take a guided tour of their "green campus". Numbers on these two walking tours will be limited to 20 people on each. A sign up sheet will be available during the COMNAP Symposium. Tours will take place on Monday 16 July, 1630-1730 and on Tuesday 17 July, 1400-1500 (so if you are not part of a regional break-out group at one of these times you can join in on one of the campus tours). The tours are free and anyone is welcome. More information will be available at the Symposium.

All are welcome to attend this opening event where the contest winners will be showcased and announced.
